Feature: Looking Through Pacific Eyes

Through Pacific Eyes is an exhibition of photographs by Australian photojournalist Sandy Scheltema. Commissioned by The Foundation these wonderful images visually capture the challenges of restoring sight in the Pacific.

The photographs feature the story of Lasela, a Samoan woman who travelled from her village in Savaii to Apia to receive sight restoring treatment from Dr Imo, Samoa’s only eye doctor. The hospital in Apia provides eye care for Samoa's 200,000 people and leaves Dr Imo little time to deliver services in the rural areas where they are desperately needed. Lasela had to take her journey to Apia eleven times for pre and post-operative check ups.

A new joint initiative between The Foundation and the New Zealand Agency for International Development (NZAID) was also announced at the exhibition launch.

NZAID has provided a five year grant to The Foundation for its Pacific eye health program, which will be used to promote and improve eye health in the Pacific.

Currently many countries in the region have inadequate eye care services, with very few trained eye care nurses, inadequate equipment and populations which cannot readily access the limited number of eye clinics. Lack of services is directly impacting upon the increased prevalence of blindness in the Pacific, which is in turn having a severe economic impact on regional communities.

“NZAID support provides much needed funding and enables The Foundation to work effectively as an official advocate for blindness prevention in the Pacific,” said New Zealand Country Manager, Carmel Williams.

Through Pacific Eyes will be exhibited in various venues around New Zealand over the next few months. To preview some of the images click here or see where we work in the Pacific.
